Florian Wirtz has hinted that he could feature against France in the UEFA Nations League third-place play-off this weekend, despite being on the verge of a potentially record-breaking transfer to Liverpool.

Reds supporters had a chance to watch the 22-year-old in action earlier this week when Germany faced Portugal in the semi-final in Munich.

Wirtz delivered a solid performance, even putting Germany ahead early in the second half, but Portugal fought back to secure a narrow 2-1 win.

Liverpool's Ibrahima Konate also played the full 90 minutes in France’s dramatic semi-final against Spain, which ended in a 5-4 defeat.

Germany will now face France on Sunday in the third-place clash, and many Liverpool fans had hoped Wirtz would be rested by Julian Nagelsmann - especially amid widespread reports that a move to Anfield could be close, despite Liverpool’s £109m bid being rejected by Bayer Leverkusen last week.

However, Wirtz has suggested he is looking forward to playing again this weekend, potentially indicating that he may start.

Speaking to RTL after watching the France vs Spain semi-final, Wirtz said: "It was of course a game with many good players on the pitch.

I could've watched it for another hour.

"These are players who have played unbelievably well all season and who are just incredibly good at football and make many right decisions.

I'm of course happy that I can play against players like this and compete against them.

"It's easy to say, but I'm someone who always focuses on himself and tries to do his task as well as possible and that's what I'll try to do in the next game [against France] as well and hope that we can get come out of it with a victory."
