Liverpool have made an improved club-record bid to sign Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen.
The ECHO understands that talks are ongoing between Liverpool and Leverkusen, as they look to agree a deal for the 22-year-old, who has expressed his desire to move to Anfield.
If Wirtz signed for Liverpool, he would add an extra dimension to the squad.
An attacking midfielder that can be used out wide and up front, his preferred position is the No.10 role behind the striker.

However, Wirtz can often drift elsewhere.
During Germany's Nations League game against Portugal on Thursday, Wirtz popped in a number of areas and was often seen in a hybrid role.
For his goal, Wirtz picked up the ball out on the left-hand side before driving in-field and then receiving a cross from Joshua Kimmich before heading home from inside the box.
That is something that Wirtz could replicate at Liverpool and operate in a similar position to Dominik Szoboszlai, who was the most advanced midfielder in Arne Slot's midfield three.

Szoboszlai often had the freedom to roam around and get into areas where he was expected to score and assist.
Having totalled 57 goals and 65 assists in 197 matches for Leverkusen, Wirtz has the potential to rack up impressive numbers should he arrive at Liverpool and become their No.10.
And the Germany international has already offered a glimpse of the role he could have at Liverpool, hinting he is the type of player that prefers to have a free role.
"What I do is mostly very spontaneous because it appears to be the best solution in that situation," Wirtz told Werkself Magazin in an interview back in 2024.
"But sometimes I suspect or know beforehand what the opponent will do, and then it's easier to do my own tricks because I can see how the opponents move and when they'll dive in.
"It's one of my strengths that sometimes I know in advance what will happen — and then I can concentrate on the solution, so that I anticipate the situation and create an advantage.

Jeremie Frimpong has signed to replace the outgoing Trent Alexander-Arnold, and Wirtz could be the next to arrive, with a deal also progressing for Milos Kerkez.
