As Liverpool close in on the signing of Florian Wirtz, some fans' attention may well turn towards the star's potential squad number.

Liverpool and Bayer Leverkusen have agreed a fee for the player which could hit a British record £116m if add-ons are met, though there are still some bits and pieces to take care of before the signing is officially announced.

Wirtz has worn the number 10 shirt for Leverkusen in each of the last two seasons, including their 2023-24 title-winning campaign.

He had 27 on the back of his shirt for his Leverkusen debut, though, and it just so happens the number is currently vacant at Anfield.

Darwin Nunez wore 27 in his first Liverpool season, only to switch to 9 after Roberto Firmino left the club.

Nunez's old number is still vacant, meaning Wirtz could return to the number he wore as a teenager.

Only a handful of players have worn 27 for Liverpool during the Premier League era, but the club counts a cult hero among that number.

Vignal had 27 on his back during the 2000-01 season when Liverpool completed a cup treble, though the Frenchman didn't make it onto the pitch in any of the three finals.

Wirtz is set to become the third senior star to join Arne Slot's squad this summer.
