Former Germany manager Joachim Löw has admitted he is surprised by Florian Wirtz’s decision to join Liverpool.

The Reds remain in talks with Bayer Leverkusen regarding a would-be club-record deal for the 22-year-old.

The Bundesliga outfit have rejected two bids from Liverpool to date, with the most recent totalling £109m, but all parties remain confident that a deal will be finalised this summer.

Bayern Munich had previously been favourites to sign Wirtz, who had been expected to stay put in the Bundesliga, while Man City withdrew their interest before the Reds stole a march on the Bavarians.

But Löw - who handed Wirtz his senior international debut in 2021 - has admitted he thought the playmaker would instead reunite with Xabi Alonso at Real Madrid.

"Liverpool is a real statement, because moving to the Premier League also involves a lot of adaptation,” he told Bild.

“That starts with the rhythm of the game.

“But Florian Wirtz has no upper limit; he's definitely ready for the next step.

That's very important for a young player.

"It would have been a good fit at FC Bayern as well.

I don't know what Vincent Kompany was thinking about the two of them.

“But the fact is: Last year, things worked out brilliantly with Florian Wirtz and Jamal Musiala in the national team.

“With their style of play and finesse, they took the team to the next level, so that Germany can once again compete for titles.”

While Löw might have expected Wirtz to move elsewhere, he is no doubt that his compatriot will be a success at Liverpool and is confident he will establish himself as a world-class player.

“I have no concerns that Wirtz will prevail – no matter where he would have gone,” he said.
