Liverpool Football Club have officially announced the signing of German international Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen in a deal worth a reported total of £116m.

It would makes him the most expensive signing in the club’s history and breaking the British transfer record should all add-ons be achieved.

The 22-year-old attacking midfielder has signed a five-year contract with the Premier League champions after completing his medical at the club’s AXA Training Centre today.

Wirtz, who arrived on Merseyside yesterday after flying into Manchester airport, will earn approximately £200,000 per week plus bonuses at Anfield.

The German star chose Liverpool despite reportedly being offered higher wages by Bayern Munich, who were also pursuing his signature alongside Manchester City.

Speaking to the club’s official website after putting pen to paper, Wirtz said:

The attacking midfielder enjoyed a stellar 2023-24 season with Bayer Leverkusen, playing a pivotal role in their historic unbeaten Bundesliga title win under then-manager Xabi Alonso.

The German international was named Bundesliga Player of the Season for 2023-24 after contributing 11 goals and 12 assists in 32 league appearances.

His impressive form continued into the 2024-25 season, where he scored six goals in nine UEFA Champions League appearances, becoming the first German player to score five goals in his first five Champions League matches.

Wirtz is expected to join his new teammates for pre-season training in early July, with Liverpool set to embark on a tour of Hong Kong and Japan month.

The German international could make his competitive debut for the club in the Community Shield against Crystal Palace on 10 August.
