The German has shown glimpses of his undeniable talent, particularly in Liverpool’s Champions League victory over Atletico Madrid where he created five chances.
His only assist to date came in the Community Shield against Crystal Palace, a fixture classified as a friendly rather than competitive football.
Now, in an interview with Sky Germany, Florian Wirtz has received some words of wisdom from Jurgen Klopp.
Klopp’s first words were: “Stay cool”
Wirtz responded:
“No, not for me.
I know what I can do and I also know that I’ll really get it on the pitch at some point, so I’m just staying cool.
That’s a good hint.”
The former Liverpool boss then said: “People give you time”.
To that, Wirtz then explained that he actually doesn’t want to hear that and wants the focus to be on his good performances:
” Yes, I hear it a lot.
I don’t want to hear that all the time, “give him time, give him time”, the Liverpool No.10 said.
“Instead, I just try every time anew to try to do it better than before.
And sometimes there are just phases when maybe not everything goes for you, I actually haven’t had that often in my career.”
“If I’ve survived it – that’s maybe harsh now, because I’m not playing badly, but just the scorer points aren’t there yet – it will come at some point and then everything will be fine.”
“It’s no secret that I’d like to have more so far, but I’m patient and, as I just said, I know very well that I’m good at football?
Sooner or later, I’m sure that this will become the norm again.”
Wirtz will likely be rested against Southampton this evening but could come off the bench having been a substitute for the Merseyside derby.
