Florian Wirtz has revealed how Xabi Alonso reacted to his Liverpool move that was officially announced last week.
When Jurgen Klopp announced in January 2024 that he would step down as Liverpool manager at the end of the season, Xabi Alonso quickly became the overwhelming favourite among supporters to take the helm.
A Champions League-winning midfielder during his playing days at Anfield, Alonso’s meteoric rise as a coach at Bayer Leverkusen made him a dream candidate for many Liverpool fans.
However, Alonso opted to remain in Germany, paving the way for Liverpool to appoint Arne Slot – a decision that every Reds fan is happy with after delivering the elusive Premier League title in his debut campaign.
Meanwhile, the Spaniard is at Real Madrid, where he will surely meet Liverpool in this coming season’s Champions League.
Alonso will obviously be familiar with new signing Florian Wirtz, having taken the German international to new heights in the two and a half-seasons he worked with him.
And during Wirtz signing day, the former Leverkusen man revealed that he had spoken to Alonso – with the Spanish manager giving his blessing for the move:
“He was very happy that I am coming here [to Liverpool].”
“He was telling me that he also came here when he was 22.”
The new Liverpool man also revealed that Jeremie Frimpong was in his ear telling him to make the move:
“I met with him on holiday of course, we spoke a lot – also at the end of the season,” Wirtz said.
“He’s a good friend, and was telling me to also join Liverpool.”
“I’m very happy that we are coming together from Leverkusen.”
“I think the people can be very excited with Jeremie and also me, so I’m really happy now.”
If all add-ons are achieved, it would make him the most expensive signing in the club’s history and break the British transfer record.
The 22-year-old attacking midfielder signed a five-year contract.
Wirtz will earn approximately £200,000 per week plus bonuses at Anfield.
