Since his record-breaking £116 million transfer from Bayer Leverkusen to Liverpool, Florian Wirtz has faced growing scrutiny over his performances.

Despite the Reds’ perfect start winning their first five Premier League matches, many critics argue that Wirtz’s impact on the pitch has been underwhelming and inconsistent.

Several pundits and fans have labeled his early displays as mediocre and disappointing, especially considering the expectations attached to such a high-profile signing.

Some suggest the German playmaker’s lack of tangible contributions, such as goals and assists, has exposed him to harsh criticism, with only Liverpool’s unbeaten start preventing a more intense backlash.

The Premier League’s high tempo and physical demands have clearly presented a challenge, affecting Wirtz’s rhythm and decision-making speed.

Adjusting to a new team, league, and country at just 22 years old naturally requires time.

But speaking to Sky Germany for an interview this week, the Liverpool N0.7 has revealed the high standards at Anfield means he has already put on muscle in the first few months on Merseyside:

“I’ve actually already gained a few kilos.

You don’t see it so blatantly, but a bit,” he said.

Wirtz also revealed how Arne Slot told him he would be rested for the Merseyside derby:

“After the Champions League game [vs Atletico Madrid], he told me that I wouldn’t start in the league because he wanted to control the load a bit and looked at which game I could play better in.”

“That’s when he decided to play in the Champions League, that I’d start there and then sit on the bench in the league for the time being.

But at the moment, it’s just paid.

“The coach told me that you don’t have to put pressure on yourself here in the squad about how much you cost or not, because it feels like everyone around you could cost just as much if they played somewhere else.”
