Liverpool transfer target Florian Wirtz has responded to Germany's 2-1 defeat in the Nations League semi-final as talks over a blockbuster move continue.

The 22-year-old was on the losing side against possible future teammate Diogo Jota, with Julian Nagelsmann's side forced to settle for the third-place playoff against the losers of Spain vs France.

Wirtz headed Die Mannschaft towards the final, but that second-half strike was, ultimately, in vain after Chico Conceicao and Cristiano Ronaldo were both on target to complete the turnaround at the Allianz Arena.

With Liverpool fans watching on with intent, they got their first look at the Bayer Leverkusen star after interest in his services ramped up at the end of May.

The Reds have had two offers rejected for the playmaker, with their latest tabled offer amounting to £109million with the Bundesliga outfit demanding €150million (around £126m).

But transfer chiefs at Anfield remain determined to negotiate an agreement with the attacking midfielder as they look to avoid a long-running saga - with the first section of the window set to close on June 10 - before reopening six days later.

Following the defeat in Munich, Wirtz posted on Instagram: "Not enough today [face with diagonal mouth emoji]."

The Daily Mail's Lewis Steele then asked him a question about the prospect of being excited ahead of a move to Liverpool during his walk through the mixed zone after the match.

There was no reply from Wirtz, but he could offer a brief look and nod at the reporter.

It marked the second acknowledgement of the Reds' interest - after he was forced to fire back at reports that he had eyes on the No.10 at Anfield.

"Who says I want the 10," Wirtz posted on his Instagram story.

"I respect players.

"Don't believe everything what's written."

Speculation surrounding Wirtz, his future and a possible move to Liverpool, will now continue in the coming days before the third-place playoff on June 8.

Nagelsmann says that he was left disappointed by Germany's performance, despite taking the lead, as he revealed Joshua Kimmich gave his international teammates a dressing down after the defeat.

"The disappointment is obviously huge, especially given the performance," he said.

"That's a good sign.

Josh Kimmich addressed the team with a few words.

"I don't feel like lashing out like that.

"I know the path the team has taken in recent weeks.

"It's a deserved defeat, and we didn't play well in possession.

"Defensively, we also lacked the grit that has distinguished us in recent games."
