The Reds will hope to have Florian Wirtz at their disposal for their Premier League title defence, which will get underway in August.
A deal worth £116million has been agreed between Liverpool and Leverkusen for Wirtz to move to Anfield this summer.
The Germany international is expected to complete a medical this week and sign a long-term contract.
Once a transfer has been completed, Liverpool will then look ahead to planning for next season with Wirtz in their ranks.
Wirtz will move to Anfield with the aim of being one of the first names on the team sheet at Liverpool
Once he becomes a Liverpool player, he will be expected to operate in a No.10 role, although the added versatility of being able to play on the wing or as a centre forward is extremely valuable.
If Wirtz were to start in a No.10 role, it would also give greater encouragement to the rest of Liverpool's forward line
Particularly who plays as a central striker for the Reds next term.
At the moment, that player would be either Darwin Nunez or Diogo Jota
However, both players have been linked with moves away from Anfield, and Liverpool have been heavily linked with signing a new No.9.
Newcastle United star Alexander Isak and Eintracht Frankfurt striker Hugo Ekitike are two players whose names continue to be mentioned on the Liverpool rumour mill.
Both players are thought to be valued in excess of £85million, meaning a deal for either of them would not be cheap.
It remains to be seen whether or not Liverpool will go on to sign a new striker this summer and if one or both of Nunez and Jota will depart.
Whoever ends up starting in the centre forward role for the Reds next season - be it a player signing in a future transfer or a memeber of the current squad - will be thrilled to have a player of Wirtz's calibre supporting them through the middle of the team.
