Fenway Sports Group (FSG) may have just granted Liverpool the permission they require to wrap up the summer signing of Florian Wirtz.

The Reds remain intent on landing the Bayer Leverkusen midfielder, sticking with negotiations despite the rejection of their latest €130m (£109m) offer.

Naturally, the refusal of a substantial club-record transfer can be seen as a bleak outcome to early rounds of talks, though Liverpool still feel there is a deal to be done in regards to Wirtz, who has reportedly outlined Anfield is his preference this summer.

Leverkusen appear to be steadfast in their €150m (£126m) valuation of a player who has served them for five years, over which time he has displayed the credentials of a world-class talent.

It may be Reds sporting director Richard Hughes in direct contact with officials from the German club but it is FSG CEO of football, Michael Edwards, who has reportedly been a key driver in the bid to sign the 22-year-old.

German publication BILD have covered his movements as the intermediary of FSG bosses, i.e.

John W Henry, and Liverpool.

They claim after a latest meeting in Boston, Edwards has secured the green light to spend the full €150m (£126m) and wrap this saga up for good.

With the report specifying that an agreement could still be reached for €140m (£117m) at lowest, this would still be a club record-breaker.

The most Liverpool have paid for any one player is Darwin Nunez - £85m in total back in 2022, £21m of which was made up of add-ons.

Meanwhile Chelsea hold the Premier League transfer record for spending £115m on midfielder Moises Caicedo two summers ago.

It is exciting times at the home of the Premier League champions, and this scenario is something that former manager Jurgen Klopp earmarked when he caught wind of Edwards returning to FSG's structure upon his 2024 departure.

The 57-year-old German said: "I'm really happy he's back...

Michael is a top choice," adding that Edwards is "not dumb" whilst hinting he would wouldn't approach the ownership directly without there being real potential in a record-breaking investment.

Liverpool and Leverkusen have inadvertently helped one another in the market elsewhere on Tuesday, with the German side confirming the signing of Brentford goalkeeper Mark Flekken an hour before Caoimhin Kelleher completed an £18m switch to the Bees.
