Liverpool have reportedly submitted an improved offer of up to £113 million to Bayern Leverkusen for Florian Wirtz as negotiations over a deal for the attacker continue.

Earlier this month, the ECHO reported that the Premier League champions had a bid of up to £109m rejected for Wirtz, with the Bundesliga outfit holding out for a figure closer to £126m.

But on Friday night, The Times claimed that Liverpool returned to the negotiating table with a fresh bid for the German international, which would guarantee Leverkusen a sum of £100m and a potential further £13m if certain performance-related bonuses were achieved during the player's time on Merseyside.

The Times adds that Liverpool are "unwilling" to meet Leverkusen's current asking price for the Bundesliga Player of the Year, who has two years left on his current deal.

Earlier in the day, BILD claimed that talks between both clubs were progressing well and it was "considered certain" that an agreement would be reached in the days ahead.

It was even suggested that Wirtz could travel to Merseyside next week to undergo a medical and the other formalities that are required before he can officially become a member of Arne Slot's squad.

Liverpool are in pole position to sign the German international after he rejected approaches from Bayern Munich and Manchester City.

Should Liverpool's deal for Wirz be accepted by Leverkusen, then he would become the most expensive player in the club's history.

Wirtz played and scored in Germany's Nations League defeat to Portugal earlier this week and is set to represent his nation again in Sunday's third-place play-off against France.

"It was of course a game with many good players on the pitch," he said of France's thrilling 5-4 defeat to Spain on Thursday.

"I could've watched it for another hour.

"These are players who have played unbelievably well all season and who are just incredibly good at football and make many right decisions.

"I'm of course happy that I can play against players like this and compete against them.

"It's easy to say, but I'm someone who always focuses on himself and tries to do his task as well as possible and that's what

"I'll try to do in the next game [against France] as well and hope that we can get come out of it with a victory."
