Florian Wirtz’s future has dominated transfer headlines for three consecutive summers, with the 22-year-old Bayer Leverkusen playmaker widely regarded as one of Europe’s most coveted young talents.
While Bayern Munich have long been considered as the frontrunner for his signature, recent developments suggest the race remains wide open.
Contrary to German media narratives portraying a Bayern-bound inevitability, the Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger reveals a far more nuanced situation.
Wirtz’s current deal runs through 2027 without a release clause, forcing interested clubs to negotiate directly with Leverkusen.
The club’s €150m valuation remains firm, particularly for Bundesliga rivals Bayern Munich.
There is a suggestion this price will be softened for clubs outside of the Bundesliga.
While Hans-Joachim Wirtz, his father who also represents the 22-year-old as his agent, maintains ties to Bayern leadership but has also engaged in talks with at least four European suitors.
According to the report, Wirtz’s representatives have had detailed discussions with both Manchester City and Liverpool.
Surprisingly, it’s suggested Liverpool would be able to pay the transfer fee:
“Wirtz and his family are said to have spoken to at least four top European clubs – including English clubs Manchester City and Liverpool FC.”
“In contrast to FC Bayern, these two clubs from the financially strong Premier League are also more likely to be able to pay the transfer fee for Wirtz in the coming transfer window.”
Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes insists no formal offers have been received and maintains weekly contact with the Wirtz family.
The reports compares this saga to Kai Havertz’s protracted 2020 move to Chelsea, which only concluded in September despite much fanfare earlier in the window.
With UEFA Nations League commitments in June and Leverkusen’s new training complex funding at stake, a late-window resolution appears likely.
Wirtz has 16 goals and 15 assists in 44 appearances across all competitions.
His underlying statistics also showcase why he’s wanted by Europe’s elite.
Florian Wirtz?
The Reds hierarchy would certainly view Wirtz’s elite ball progression and positional versatility as an ideal replacement for Alexander-Arnold’s playmaking output following his departure to Real Madrid.
It’s clear that it would be a difficult deal to close, but reports that Wirtz’s move to Bayern Munich is all but complete appear premature.
