Mathys Tel was one of six players to miss out on Tottenham's Champions League squad for the first half of the 2025/26 season.
The French winger completed a permanent move from Bayern Munich this summer in a £30million deal, after spending the second half of last season on loan at the club.
But Tel will not be playing a part in all of his new side's fixtures, as there was no room for him in Thomas Frank's 25-man squad.
He fell victim to competition rules, which state that at least eight places must be reserved for locally-trained or homegrown players.
This resulted in several first-team regulars missing out, with Yves Bissouma and other summer signing Kota Takai also failing to make the cut.
Long-term absentees Radu Dragusin, Dejan Kulusevski and James Maddison were also made unavailable for selection for Spurs' first eight European games.
After Europa League glory last term, Tottenham will begin their Champions League campaign at home to Villareal on September 16.
Tottenham Champions League squad list:
Goalkeepers: Guglielmo Vicario, Antonin Kinsky, Brandon Austin.
Defenders: Kevin Danso, Destiny Udogie, Cristian Romero, Pedro Porro, Djed Spence, Ben Davies, Micky van de Ven.
Midfielders: Joao Palhinha, Xavi Simons, Archie Gray, Lucas Bergvall, Mohammed Kudus, Brennan Johnson, Wilson Odobert, Pape Matar Sarr, Rodrigo Bentancur.
Strikers: Richarlison, Dominic Solanke, Randal Kolo Muani.

Federico Chiesa has been omitted from Liverpool's squad for league phase of the Champions League.
The Italy international missed out at the expense of 16-year-old forward Rio Ngumoha, who marked his Premier League debut by scoring a late winner in a 3-2 win over Newcastle.
Arne Slot has named a 22-man squad for the European competition, with each team allowed a maximum of 25 on their main 'A' list.
However at least eight places must be reserved for locally-trained or homegrown players, which has had a direct impact on Chiesa.
An unlimited number of players can be included on the 'B' list due to their age and club-trained status.
But with Ngumoha not qualifying as homegrown, having only signed for the Reds from Chelsea last year, he has been picked ahead of Chiesa.
British-record signing Alexander Isak was unsurprisingly named in Slot's squad, as well as other summer signings Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike, Jeremie Frimpong, Milos Kerkez, Giovanni Leoni and Giorgi Mamardashvili.
The Reds will kick-off their European campaign when they welcome Atletico Madrid to Anfield on September 17.
LIVERPOOL CHAMPIONS LEAGUE SQUAD LIST A: Alisson, Mamardashvili, Woodman, Gomez, Endo, Van Dijk, Konate, Kerkez, Bradley, Leoni, Robertson, Frimpong, Wirtz, Szoboszlai, Mac Allister, Jones, Gravenberch, Isak, Salah, Gakpo, Ekitike, Ngumoha.
LIST B: Nyoni, Danns, Bajcetic.

Facundo Buonanotte has been left out of Chelsea's squad for the league phase of this season's Champions League.
The Argentinian completed a season-long loan move from Brighton on transfer deadline day, with the Blues paying £2m in the deal.
But Buonanotte has already suffered a setback in his Stamford Bridge career, as the west Londoner's announced their squad for the first phase of the European competition.
This comes just days after the attacker had expressed his excitement over the chance to play in the Champions League for the first time.
After joining the Blues, he told the club: "I’ll get the opportunity to play in the Champions League for the first time, which will be a great challenge.
"I’m really looking forward to this season and hopefully I can help the club to achieve its goals."
The Blues get their European campaign underway away to Bayern Munich on September 17.
Chelsea squad for Champions League league phase:
Goalkeepers: Robert Sanchez, Filip Jorgensen
Defenders: Tosin Adarabioyo, Benoit Badiashile, Trevoh Chalobah, Levi Colwill, Marc Cucurella, Wesley Fofana, Malo Gusto, Jorell Hato, Reece James
Midfielders: Moises Caicedo, Dario Essugo, Enzo Fernandez, Andrey Santos
Forwards: Liam Delap, Alejandro Garnacho, Jamie Gittens, Marc Guiu, Pedro Neto, Cole Palmer, Joao Pedro, Estevao Willian

Alejandro Garnacho will wear the number 49 shirt for Chelsea, the club have revealed.
The Argentinian winger completed a £40million move from Manchester United last week.
He was spotted in the crowd at Stamford Bridge for his new side's 2-0 victory over Fulham, just hours before his signing was officially announced.
While Garnacho will have to wait until after the September international break to make his debut, the Blues have confirmed what number he will wear when he does take to the pitch.
A video shared on the club's social media platforms showed his Chelsea shirt being printed with his name and the number 49.
There is some sentimental value too, with this the same number Garnacho wore in his first two seasons in Man United's first-team.

With less than a year until the next World Cup begins, England look set to confirm their qualification in the coming weeks.
The Three Lions have a 100 per cent record so far in Group K and sit top of the standings with a four-point gap.
England opened their campaign with a 2-0 win against Albania, with Myles Lewis-Skelly and Harry Kane both netting.
Reece James, Kane and Eberechi Eze scored against Latvia as their group success continued.
A narrow 1-0 win over Andorra made it three wins from three thanks to yet another goal from Kane.

Rangers sporting director Kevin Thelwell has publicly backed Russell Martin despite such a poor start to the season.
The former Southampton boss has won just three off his 11 matches in charge at Ibrox.
Rangers suffered a dismal exit from the Champions League as they were thrashed 9-1 on aggregate by Club Brugge in their play-off tie.
However, Thelwell has shown his support for Martin and believes their performances will improve during his spell in the dugout.
"I've been very lucky over the course of my career to work with some very good managers and some very good head coaches, and I have to say, he's one of the best," he said in a club interview.
"He's a very good coach, very good on the grass, very well organised, he's extremely high energy.
"Having touched base with JB briefly this morning, he’s feeling much better and thanks everyone for their well wishes and messages."

Mohamed Salah has responded to a Liverpool account on X for what he believes is a 'disrespectful' post.
Anfield Edition posted an image of summer sales Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez above new arrivals Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak.
"Name a bigger upgrade in footballing history," their caption read.
But Liverpool superstar Salah did not appear to be pleased with the suggestion and issued a response with a quoted message.
"How about we celebrate the great signings without disrespecting the PL champions?" he said.

Wales boss Craig Bellamy has expressed his dislike towards the use of an artificial pitch for their upcoming match against Kazakhstan.
The Dragons travel to the Astana Arena this weekend for their next 2026 World Cup qualifying match.
Both sides will play on artificial turf, which has been installed to cope with the harsh winter conditions in Kazakhstan.
But Bellamy does not appear to be looking forward to the playing surface as Wales eye their third win in Group J.
"We're not exposed to it, we don't play on it, I'm not a fan of it," he said.
"I have to be completely honest, I don't see the need for nations [to have artificial pitches].
"Lower level?
One or two do abroad, even in Belgium, but this is different."

Ruben Loftus-Cheek has recalled the moment he discovered he was joining the England squad.
The AC Milan star has been given a Three Lions call-up for the first time since 2018.
Loftus-Cheek, formerly of Chelsea, could add to his ten international caps this month.
England face Andorra and Serbia in 2026 World Cup qualifiers, with both matches coming live on talkSPORT.
Speaking in a press conference, the 29-year-old revealed where he was when he found out he would return to international duty.
"I was notified before the weekend to just be ready, but I wasn't in the first squad," he said on Friday.
"With Milan, we played Friday and I had a couple of days to see my family so I was in England anyway, with my family, and got the call I would be coming to join the squad.
Across his two spells at Man City he played 358 games, winning five Premier League titles, the Champions League and more.
Gundogan said as his depature was confirmed: “Manchester City will always hold a special place in my heart.
“We have enjoyed so much success in our time together and there have been so many unforgettable moments not least being captain for the Treble-winning season.
“To win the Premier League and FA Cup trophies meant so much to me but to then be afforded the opportunity of lifting the Champions League trophy for this Club for the first time, especially in Istanbul, will live with me forever.
“I have no doubts Manchester City will enjoy much more success in the future and I will certainly be watching on from afar as I continue my career in Turkey, a country that means ever such a lot to me.”
