A "Forever 20" Diojo Jota mural has been completed near Anfield ahead of the new season following the Portuguese fan favourite's death.

Liverpool FC and its fans are preparing to remember the Reds star after he tragically died aged 28 alongside his brother, Andre Silva, in a car crash last month.

The world of football came together to remember the brothers who had been driving to get the ferry to the UK from Spain ahead of Jota joining up with his Liverpool team-mates for pre-season training.

Ahead of the new Premier League season kicking off at Anfield on Friday, August 15, the club announced it had commissioned a sculpture to be made in honour of the forward.

LFC have since retired the popular Portuguese’s No.20 squad number across all levels after consultation with the player's family, and they announced a number of further tributes for a forward who joined from Wolves in September 2020.

Floral tributes that were left outside the stadium following the passing of the striker will now be composted and used in flower beds across all club sites, including Anfield, the AXA Training Centre and AXA Melwood Training Centre.

The remaining artefacts are set to be recycled by a specialist company and used to help create a permanent memorial for Jota, that will become a future focal point of remembrance at Anfield.

The design itself remains the subject of dialogue.

In the meantime, a temporary area of reflection has been created outside the ground itself so people can continue to pay their respects.

Ahead of the season starting next week, street art collective Murwalls have completed a new mural to Jota on Sybil Road, lamenting the player as "Forever 20".

The wall features a painting of Jota doing his signature heart gesture as he walks in a Liverpool kit which also features a gold Premier League badge on the sleeve to represent the club winning the league with the help of Jota last season.

Along the base of the mural there are also several handwritten tributes to the adored player.

It also comes after players wore a specially-designed patch with ‘Diogo J 20’ stitched on in memory of their team-mate across their two preseason matches in Asia last month.

The LFC Foundation has also committed to creating a grassroots football programme in Diogo’s name, while a special fan mosaic and a minute of silence is being planned for the first game of the Premier League season, against Bournemouth.

Jota and Silva hailed from Gondomar, a small city 7km east of Porto, and their boyhood team shared a moving tribute to the brothers who meant so much to their community.

The fourth tier Portuguese side has dedicated their kit for the 2025/26 season to the brothers as the shirt is emblazoned with their faces.

This season, Gondomar Sport Club enters the field with a heart full of memories and feelings.

"Our new jersey brings in great the image of Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva, two sons of Gondomar who left us too soon, but who will live forever in the history of our club and our football.

"Every time our athletes put on this jersey, it's like stepping on the field with them.
