When a player hits world-class levels, people often assume there’s no more room for growth.
That’s especially true for defenders.
Once they become leaders at the back, it feels like their game is complete.
But that’s not always the case.
In fact, some players keep improving well into their 30s – especially under the right manager.
That’s what’s happening at Liverpool right now.
Virgil van Dijk has already achieved a lot.
The Dutchman, who recently signed a new contract keeping him at the Merseyside outfit, has won the Champions League, the Premier League, and multiple individual awards.
But some believe he’s reached a new level this season.
The arrival of Arne Slot may have something to do with that.
At least, that’s what one former Dutch international thinks.
Bryan Roy, who played for Ajax and spent time in Italy with Zeman’s Foggia, gave his take in a recent interview.
Speaking to TuttoMercatoWeb, Roy praised Van Dijk’s development and the impact of Slot.
“Since Virgil started playing with Slot, if possible he has improved even more,” Roy said.
“Because with Arne he has found an organised style of football in a way that makes things much easier for him in possession, to play forward.”
Roy also linked Van Dijk’s progress to his performances with the Dutch national team.
“The same can be said for the national team, with Koeman.”
“That’s why he has distanced himself from the other defenders.”
He didn’t stop there?
Roy put Van Dijk among some of the best defenders football has seen.
“After Maldini, Costacurta, Baresi and Tassotti, there haven’t been many defenders stronger than others in football up to now.”
As for what’s left to achieve?
Roy was clear, “All he needs to win is the European Championship or the World Cup…”
Liverpool fans already rate Van Dijk highly, but this kind of praise just shows how far his influence has reached – even now.
