The Reds were top of the Premier League and still in contention for multiple trophies.
Players, staff, and fans alike were left reeling.
Within a year however, the German was back in football but this time as Red Bull’s Global Head of Soccer beginning in January 2025.
And it’s fair to say there was more than a few people who did not approve of the former Reds boss choice.
Critics point to Red Bull’s controversial acquisition of RB Leipzig in 2009, transforming a regional fifth-tier team into a Bundesliga outfit with a structure that bypasses Germany’s strict 50+1 ownership rule.
Bayern Munich ultras and Borussia Dortmund faithful have led the charge, accusing Klopp of “selling out” and abandoning the values he championed at Mainz, Dortmund, and Liverpool.
Now Jurgen Klopp’s former assistant at Liverpool, Peter Krawietz, has responded to some of the criticism his former colleague has received.
Speaking to GOAL, Krawietz said:
“I’ve taken note of the criticism.
I think there’s a bit of a misunderstanding on the part of the fans.”
“Where would Jurgen have been allowed to work, what would the public have approved of.
You can’t hold a public vote on what the fans approve of.”
Klopp himself addressed the criticism on Toni Kroos’ podcast, insisting he “didn’t want to step on anybody’s toes” and reaffirming his “immense love” for all his former clubs.
He added that his advisory role would focus on nurturing talent and providing strategic guidance, rather than day-to-day interference.
Despite the defense, the debate rages on in Germany, where Red Bull’s model remains deeply unpopular.
