Liverpool’s coaching ranks have undergone a significant overhaul this summer under Arne Slot.
Former Feyenoord boss Giovanni van Bronckhorst has arrived to bolster the senior team’s tactical setup, while long-time goalkeeping coach Xavi Valero has returned to Anfield having worked on Merseyside under Rafa Benitez.
At the same time, two stalwarts of goalkeeping department, Fabian Otte and the legendary Brazilian shot-stopper Taffarel, have departed to pursue fresh challenges elsewhere.
Otte is now working for Tottenham Hotspur as part of Thomas Frank’s new-look backroom staff, while Taffarel recently announced a new role at the Brazil National Football Federation.
Amid these reshuffles behind the scenes, another familiar figure has exited Liverpool’s youth structure.
After twelve years of service progressing through every age group, Barry Lewtas has stepped down as head coach of the Under-21s earlier this summer
And it has now Lewtas has been appointed interim head coach of England’s Under-16s squad until December 2025 and will also support Ben Futcher with the Under-20s alongside Tom Huddlestone.
The role marks Lewtas’s first foray into international coaching and comes on the back of a decorated spell at Liverpool’s academy.
The Training Ground Guru report:
“Lewtas, who worked for the Reds for 12 years, has been given a dual role.”
“He has been named as Head Coach of the Under-16s and Assistant Coach for the Under-20 side alongside Tom Huddlestone, working under Head Coach Ben Futcher
Both his jobs run until December 2025.:
Having joined the club to work with the Under-12s, Lewtas climbed the ranks to oversee the Under-21s for the past five seasons, in addition to managing the Under-19s in the UEFA Youth League.
His tenure included an FA Youth Cup triumph in 2019 and the successful development of talents like Conor Bradley, Curtis Jones, Jarell Quansah, and Caoimhin Kelleher.
