Larry Lloyd, the former Liverpool defender who was part of the first Reds team to win a European trophy, has died aged 75.

Lloyd spent five years at Anfield having joined from Bristol Rovers in April 1969 as a long-term replacement for Ron Yeats, and went on to make 218 appearances while scoring five goals.

He featured in all 66 competitive games in the 1972/73 season when claiming a league championship medal and scoring in the first leg of the UEFA Cup final against Borussia Moenchengladbach, which the Reds won on aggregate after a 3-0 home win was followed by a 2-0 defeat in Germany.

Lloyd, who was a powerful, tall centre-back, also played in the 1971 FA Cup final when Liverpool were beaten 2-1 by Arsenal.

However, he missed the 1974 final victory over Newcastle United due to an injury picked up against Norwich City three months earlier.

That proved to be his last game for Liverpool with new manager Bob Paisley, who replaced Bill Shankly that summer, preferring Phil Thompson at centre-back.

Lloyd then joined Coventry City for a club record fee.

Lloyd enjoyed an even more successful career after leaving Anfield.

He moved from Coventry to Nottingham Forest in 1976 and helped Brian Clough's side to promotion to the top flight, and then featured regularly in Forest's title-winning season in 1978 and was in the side that beat Liverpool in the League Cup final that season.

Lloyd also helped eliminate the Reds from the European Cup the following campaign and won the competition in 1979 and 1980, along with another League Cup and the European Super Cup.

Lloyd, who won four England caps, was later player-manager at Wigan Athletic, earning them promotion from the fourth tier, and was boss at Notts County.
