Several former Liverpool players have transitioned into management in recent years.

Steven Gerrard recently left Saudi Pro League side Al-Ettifaq by mutual consent in January 2025 after a final stint marked by just five wins in 17 league matches.

Despite this, he is now linked with a return to Rangers, where he previously ended the club’s decade-long title drought in 2021.

Everyone is also aware of Xabi Alonso’s emergence as one of Europe’s brightest managerial talents.

Leading Bayer Leverkusen to their first Bundesliga title in 2023/24—unbeaten domestically—and a German Cup double, his success has positioned him as the successor to Carlo Ancelotti at Real Madrid.

Meanwhile, Dirk Kuyt took charge of Belgian second-tier side Beerschot in December 2023 after a brief stint in the Netherlands, while Javier Mascherano began his managerial career with Inter Miami in November 2024, tasked with maximizing the club’s star-studded roster.

And now a former Liverpool man in Albert Riera could be coming to English shores as a manager.

TalkSPORT have reported that the Spaniard is Hull City’s front-runner to become their next manager, though no official appointment has been confirmed.

The 43-year-old Spaniard, currently in charge of Slovenian top-flight side NK Celje, has risen to the top of the Tigers’ shortlist following interviews with multiple candidates, including Michael Beale and Emre Belozoglu.

Riera’s managerial career, though still developing, has shown promise.

He guided NK Olimpija Ljubljana to a domestic double in 2022/23 (Slovenian PrvaLiga and Cup) before a brief stint at Bordeaux, where financial collapse overshadowed a mid-table Ligue 2 finish.

Since returning to Celje in 2024, he led the club to a fourth-place league finish and a thrilling UEFA Europa Conference League quarter-final run, narrowly losing 4-3 on aggregate to Fiorentina

As a player, Riera spent two seasons at Liverpool (2008–2010), making 56 appearances and contributing to their Champions League campaigns.

Though his time at Anfield was marred by inconsistency, his later career included spells at Galatasaray and Bordeaux, where he transitioned into coaching.
