Former Liverpool midfielder Dominic Corness made his Champions League debut on Tuesday night - just days after leaving the club.

The 22-year-old, who joined the Reds at the age of five, departed the club at the end of June when his contract expired.

However, Corness wasn't out of action for long as he signed with Welsh champions The New Saints on July 1.

And on Tuesday night, one week after signing for the Oswestry-based outfit, the midfielder made his Champions League debut in a first qualifying round clash against North Macedonian side Shkendija Tetovo.

Corness, formerly the captain of the Reds' under-21s before enjoying loan spells at Yverdon Sport and Gillingham, played 70 minutes as both sides played out a 0-0 draw.

Speaking to Liverpool World ahead of the tie earlier this week, Corness said: “Speaking to the club and speaking to the gaffer (Craig Harrison) made it an easy decision to come here - I didn’t really look elsewhere once we’d had a chat.

“At my age now, it’s important for me to be playing football, and playing as many games as I can.

TNS was the perfect match for that.

“It’s massive to make my debut in the Champions League, it’s a big stage.

I’m not going out there to do anything I wouldn’t normally do, just play my game.

“Last year, the club got to the Conference League phase, and it was a big attraction to me to try and do it again this year.

Once you’ve done it, the expectation is there to keep doing it every year, and if you don’t, then it’s a step down.”

TNS will travel to North Macedonia for the second leg next Tuesday.
