Longevity is something that is often under-appreciated in sport.
To continue to compete at the highest level for multiple years requires immense levels of determination, grit and a willingness to tirelessly look after your body to keep it in optimal condition.
There is one former Liverpool player that perfectly demonstrates this and his name is James Milner.
During eight years at Liverpool, James Milner made 332 appearances, scoring 26 goals and registering 46 assists.
He has made 638 appearances in the Premier League, the second-most in the division’s history, and just 15 behind current record-holder Gareth Barry.
James Milner is currently employed by Brighton & Hove Albion and now has the chance to break that record with the confirmation arriving that he has signed a one-year extension with the club.
The 39-year-old joined the Seagulls in 2023 and has played 24 times overall for the club, but suffered a frustrating 2024/25 season as a result of continuous injury and was restricted to just four appearances.
Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler has given his thoughts on the news.
“I’m really pleased we will have James with us this season.
Last season he wasn’t able to help the team on the pitch as much as he would’ve liked, but around the squad his experience is invaluable, especially for the younger players.”
“He’s a great guy to have in our environment, who is always there for me and the team.
I’m look forward to working with him again.”
The English midfielder will be hoping to stay fit next season, in an attempt to become the all-time record appearance maker in Premier League history.
The former Liverpool man is on the verge of greatness.
James Milner is seven years older than his manager Fabian Hurzeler.
A unique story, but one that perfectly encapsulates Milner’s longevity and the impact he will leave on the game when he retires.
