Breaking into a squad filled with world-class players is a challenge.
Every minute on the pitch feels like proof that years of training are worth it.
Yet the journey is not always in the player’s hands.
A change of manager can change everything.
A coach who once trusted you might leave.
A new system, new expectations, and fewer chances can follow.
For many young talents, that is when tough decisions begin—whether to wait for another chance or look elsewhere for growth.
22-year-old midfielder Tyler Morton, who came through Liverpool’s academy and once looked set for a bigger role at Anfield faced that path.
Speaking to Le Progrès about his move to Lyon, Morton opened up about how the people guiding him shaped his next step.
“Yes, without a doubt.
Jurgen Klopp was the best coach for my development.”
“I think at that moment, I was ready to play.”
“I’m not saying that no one believed it, but I think I was ready, and Klopp thought so too.”
“He gave me the opportunity to play on the biggest stage for a very big club.”
“He believed in me, allowed me to go out on loan, to develop,” he said.
Things changed after Klopp’s exit in 2024, when Arne Slot arrived.
Morton featured for only 261 minutes in five games.
“With Arne Slot, I didn’t play as much as I wanted, even though I was ready.
It was the best decision.”
“I will be eternally grateful to Jürgen Klopp and Arne Slot, in different ways.”
“They are excellent managers, but also great men.”
Morton still treasures the backing he once had?
“Jurgen just wanted the best for me, he made me play great games in the Champions League and the Premier League.”
“It was a great time, he helped me improve at every level.”
From a Liverpool point of view, it is worthy noting that Morton’s words highlight how Klopp’s trust built real belief in young players.
It also shows how swiftly a career can change when a new manager takes charge and different plans take shape.
