Liverpool are often shrewd operators in the transfer market but sometimes, they have got things wrong.
The early 2010s was a tough period for Reds fans as prior to Brendan Rodgers’ arrival in 2012, they had just slumped to an eighth place finish, with rivals Everton finishing one place higher.
The Northern Irishman arrived from Swansea but hopes were not all that high, especially as in his first season the Toffees finished above Liverpool again, leaving many fans questioning the direction of the club.
During that season, Rodgers brought in some big signings, with the likes of Daniel Sturridge, Philippe Coutinho and Joe Allen arriving, with the latter ironically costing the most money.
However, there was one player in particular who was brought in on loan who had high expectations but never reached the heights people thought he would, with the midfielder himself blaming Rodgers for why things did not work out.

When players arrive from Real Madrid, whether that be permanently or on loan, the expectations fans will have for them will always be high, no matter how many games they have actually played for the first team.
Nuri Sahin was no different and many were hoping that his loan spell would be a real success and Liverpool would then be able to sign him permanently the following summer.
This was certainly not the case, though, and the Turkish midfielder spent just six months at Anfield, with the then-24-year-old blaming his manager for the reason why it did not work out.

“I did not fail at Liverpool.
But I did not play behind the strikers,” Sahin told Diario AS in 2013.

“I talked to him and asked him why he was playing me there.
Thank God I have left Brendan Rodgers.”
Sahin’s situation at Liverpool is the perfect example of how quickly things can change in football as the Turkish midfielder actually rejected a move to Arsenal as Rodgers sold the project to him.
He believed that a switch to Merseyside and working under the Northern Irishman would have been beneficial, although how wrong he was.
“Money?
I had quite a lot of offers that would have allowed me to earn three times as much as I will earn here,” Sahin told The Guardian in 2012.
“The only reason I am here is that I know that I can play football, I know that I have a manager who trusts in me and the way I play, and I am at a huge club.
That is why I am here.
“The manager told me about his thinking, about how his team is going to play football and about how he sees me fitting into the team.”
It is a shame that things did not work out as he went on to have a rather successful playing career, suggesting that if the Reds had a different manager at the time, he might have been a stalwart in the middle of the park for many years to come.
