Liverpool have bought themselves a brand new record signing this summer in the shape of German superstar Florian Wirtz.

Wirtz is all set to make his debut on Sunday and fans are excited to see what the 22-year-old can offer Arne Slot’s team.

The fee which brought Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen was the first Liverpool have ever paid over £100m, as he overtook Darwin Nunez as the club’s most expensive addition.

Nunez will likely be pleased to drop the tag as the costliest player in Liverpool history, having failed to live up to his price across three years at Anfield.

All too often, the Uruguayan was serenaded by opposition fans with chants of ‘you’re just a s*** Andy Carroll‘; a reference to another expensive Liverpool flop.

And as Nunez looks for a move this summer, his predecessor Carroll has indeed already found one, and it is not where anyone would expect.

When Liverpool bought Carroll for £35m in 2011, he appeared to have the world at his feet.

9.

Nevertheless, Carroll has still had a good career, taking in a decent spell at West Ham after leaving Liverpool, and then returning to boyhood club Newcastle.

Since leaving Newcastle in 2021, Carroll has had an interesting career path.

He moved to France to Ligue 2 team Amiens in 2023 and then dropped even further down the divisions with financially struggling Bordeaux.

Having now left Bordeaux, the 36-year-old is back in England, and on Saturday he signed in for sixth division side Dagenham & Redbridge.

The National League South team announced a new investor, new kit and a brand new signing in Carroll all in one go on Saturday.

14 years is an absolute age in football, but this is not exactly a glowing endorsement of Liverpool spending such a big sum on the pony-tailed striker all those years ago.

Carroll ultimately played just 58 times for Liverpool scoring 11 goals.

Although there were some good moments, his career with the Reds was a massive disappointment.

There is no doubt that the former England international is far too good for the sixth level of the football pyramid, but this move will not do his Anfield legacy much good.

Given the fee Liverpool paid for him, and what he has achieved – or failed to – in the years since his exit, there is an argument that Carroll is the worst signing in the Reds’ long history.

There have been worse players, of that there is no doubt, but relative to the fee at the time, pound for pound, Carroll might take the cake.

Either way, expect this move to get plenty of coverage as he inevitably starts banging the goals in.
