Fernando Torres has been flooded with messages of support after announcing that his father, Jose, has died.

The former Liverpool striker shared the news on social media last night, in which he thanked friends and fans for sending messages of support. 

In his post, the former striker wrote: 'I couldn't end this sad day without thanking everyone from the bottom of my heart on behalf of my family and myself for so many expressions of affection and respect towards the death of my father.


'Dad, I will always keep you present. I love you. R.I.P.'

In response to his post, former team-mates and friends within the footballing world left messages of support.

The likes of Andres Iniesta, Diego Costa, David de Gea, Luis Figo, Juan Mata, Luis Garcia, Pepe Reina, Sami Hyypia and Jean Arne Riise posted heart and praying emojis. 

Former club Atletico Madrid meanwhile wrote: 'Fernando, to you and your family, all the love in the world in these complicated moments from all the red and white fans.'

Jose Torres and his wife, Flori, had three children, Fernando and his older brothers Paz and Israel. 

In a previous social media post in 2018 dedicated to his wider family, Torres praised his father for his values and for the sacrifices he made in order for his son to pursue a career in football.

'To my father for his example, for not missing a match, for teaching me the values that Atlético later also taught me,' he wrote.

'Thank you for always letting me choose and make mistakes so I can learn from my mistakes. Thank you dad.'

Torres was supported by his father during his career which started out at Atletico Madrid, before leaving for Liverpool in 2007.

He later played for Chelsea, returned to Atletico Madrid, and finished his career with Japanese side Sagan Tosu.

Torres is keen to go into coaching and was seen observing one of Jurgen Klopp's training sessions at Liverpool.
