Jürgen Klopp has extended an invitation to former Liverpool striker Fernando Torres to observe training this weekend, offering him an opportunity to gain insights into life behind the scenes at Anfield.
With Klopp set to step down at the end of the season, the Reds are already in search of his replacement.
While Bayer Leverkusen’s Xabi Alonso had been a top target, it appears he is no longer expected to leave his current role.
Amid the ongoing search for a new manager, Jürgen Klopp is reportedly planning to provide Torres with a crash course over the weekend, allowing the 40-year-old to gain a deeper understanding of what it’s like to manage a top-flight team.
According to the Spanish newspaper Marca, “Torres will be present at the Friday and Saturday sessions at the aforementioned AXA Training Center to learn first-hand the ins and outs of the Liverpool Academy, one of the most renowned in English football, and on Easter Sunday he is scheduled to watch the Premier League game against Brighton & Hove Albion.”
The purpose of Torres’ visit is to facilitate the former striker, who scored 81 goals in 142 games for Liverpool between 2007 and 2011, in learning from Klopp and gaining insights into the managerial perspective at Anfield.
Torres’ attendance at training comes shortly after the 40-year-old participated in a charity friendly at Anfield, where he scored, alongside Liverpool legends such as Steven Gerrard, Jerzy Dudek, and Martin Skrtel.
It’s important to note that Torres’ return to the club is unrelated to the ongoing search for a new manager.
As Liverpool continue their search for a successor to Klopp, and with Alonso now seemingly out of contention, club officials are compiling a list of potential alternatives.
Sporting CP’s Ruben Amorim is among the favoured choices, while Brighton’s Roberto De Zerbi is also being considered as a potential target.
