Former Liverpool flop Andy Carroll endured a nightmare full debut for new club Dagenham & Redbridge on Saturday afternoon.

The striker was sent off before half-time as the sixth-tier side were forced into an FA Cup replay.

Carroll was once the Reds' record signing, costing them £35m from Newcastle United in January 2011.

He went on to make 58 appearances at Anfield while managing to score only 11 goals, so two-and-a-half years later he was permanently sold to West Ham United for a third of the fee he arrived for.

Now 36, the striker's career has taken him through the English football pyramid and even across the English Channel to France.

He called an end to his time there with Bordeaux before the season began, now he has settled with Dagenham & Redbridge.

However, the ex-Liverpool man has got off to a challenging start with the National League South side.

It began with a hamstring injury that meant Carroll was ruled out of the opening weeks of the season.

He was finally able to make his first outing as a substitute last week in a 5-2 drubbing at the hands of Worthing.

If that was already bad, a straight red card on his first start for the Daggers has made matters worse.

It means they have to add an FA Cup second round qualifying replay to their schedule this coming Tuesday, which Carroll will now miss.

Meanwhile, Liverpool will be hoping for a positive debut for new record signing from Newcastle, Alexander Isak, if he is to find minutes against Burnley on Saturday.

The £125m man arrives having played only 18 minutes for Sweden this season, therefore needs to build up his fitness.

Arne Slot had to say: "First of all, the Swedish manager (Jon Dahl) Tomasson deserves a big compliment because he gets maybe the best striker in the world in and needs him for his country but understands that playing him might result in injuries, so he took care of the player and he deserves a big compliment for that.

"We will treat Alex the same, so don't expect 90 mins every week, he missed pre-season and team sessions so we have to build him up gradually.

"But, that will be a challenge but we have signed him for six years, so this is what the fans have to keep in mind if I bring him in.
