Former teammate of Arne Slot, Bram van Polen has voiced his support for the Dutchman’s potential appointment as Liverpool boss, citing Slot’s success at Feyenoord as evidence of his capability.

Van Polen, who shared the PEC Zwolle dressing room with Slot for four years from 2009 to 2013, praised Slot’s achievements since transitioning from a player to a coach.

The 45-year-old, initially an attacking midfielder, made the move from Sparta Rotterdam to PEC Zwolle in the latter years of his playing career.

Following Jurgen Klopp’s decision to step down as Liverpool manager after nine illustrious years, Slot has emerged as his likely successor.

Liverpool reportedly reached a compensation agreement of around £9 million with Feyenoord for Slot’s services, with an official announcement expected soon.

Van Polen emphasizes Slot’s accomplishments at Feyenoord, where he secured both Eredivisie and Dutch Cup success since taking over in 2021.

This track record, coupled with Slot’s tenure at Feyenoord, makes Van Polen believe that Slot is more than deserving of the opportunity to lead Liverpool at Anfield.

“I like that and he deserves this too,” Van Polen told ESPN after PEC Zwolle’s 5-0 defeat at Feyenoord on Sunday.

“Arne has really created something beautiful here.

“He has got Feyenoord playing football again in a way that they have not often seen in De Kuip.

“I think Arne has gotten enough feathers up his ass, but in addition to being a very good trainer, he is also a very good person – and that is often even more important to me.

“He is a sincere and very pure person.”

During his post-match press conference on Sunday, Slot candidly admitted that he had observed segments of Liverpool’s 4-2 triumph over Tottenham Hotspur earlier in the day.

“I saw a few minutes of the game (Liverpool’s 4-2 win over Tottenham) but we had to come to the stadium,” said Slot.

“Just the first goal (from Mohamed Salah), a great goal.

It was a good win from Liverpool.

“Last year I made the choice to stay and now, I probably made another choice.”
