Darwin Nunez seems destined to leave Liverpool this summer with a queue of Saudi Pro League sides queuing up for his signature according to local reports.
The 25-year-old, who joined Liverpool from Benfica for a club-record £85 million in 2022, has struggled to establish himself under Arne Slot, leading the club to consider selling him to help finance an overhaul of their forward line.
Liverpool have already paid £76.8 million of the transfer fee, with a further £8.5 million due if performance-related clauses are met.
Although the club turned down a £70 million offer from Saudi Arabia in January, they may now be forced to accept a loss on Nunez in order to invest in new recruits this summer.
Núñez has managed just 5 goals and 3 assists in 25 Premier League appearances this season, and has started only once in the league since January, with his most recent start in any competition coming in March against Southampton.
Now Saudi outlet Asharq Al-Aswat have provided their latest on the situation.
They report that negotiations between Liverpool and Saudi clubs over Darwin Núñez were active and transparent during the January transfer window.
Al-Nassr made a verbal offer to Liverpool for the Uruguayan striker on January 18, but the proposal was immediately rejected.
Liverpool were unwilling to consider selling Nunez mid-season while they were still competing on four fronts, prompting Al-Nassr to shift their focus to Colombian forward Jhon Duran instead.
Now, the four Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF) clubs, Al-Hilal, Al-Nasr, Al-Ittihad and Al-Ahli, are said to be interested in Nunez should they need forward reinforcements.
The same report indicate that Saudi clubs also have clear lines of negotiation open for other high-profile targets, including Brighton’s Kaoru Mitoma and as well as Luis Diaz.
Any of the four main Saudi Pro League clubs could move for these players if they determine a need in those positions, with no particular preference for which club makes the signing.
This flexible approach was evident in recent deals, such as Duran’s move, which began with Al-Hilal before he ultimately joined Al-Nassr, and Brazilian winger Galeno, who started talks with Al-Ittihad before transferring to Al-Ahly.
The news comes as good news for Liverpool, as it is the four aforementioned PIF clubs that have the money to pay big transfer fees for players in Europe.
