Florian Wirtz had the option of choosing Real Madrid — as well as Bayern Munich and Manchester City — with Liverpool hopeful of getting a deal over the line for the attacking midfielder this summer.
That is according to the German outlet BILD, who say that Xabi Alonso would have been interested in taking Wirtz with him to Spain.
The former Liverpool midfielder was confirmed as Carlo Ancelotti's replacement earlier this week.
However, because of the other attacking talent at the Bernabeu, a starting place wouldn't have been guaranteed — in contrast to Arne Slot being able to build his team around Wirtz in the coming years.

The 22-year-old was thought to be heading to Bayern Munich initially, but Liverpool then positioned itself in case there was a chance to convince him on a move to Merseyside.
Manchester City then dropped out of the race despite Kevin De Bruyne's exit.
At Real Madrid, Wirtz would have to compete for a place in the starting XI with Jude Bellingham and various other attacking talents.
In addition to Wirtz, Liverpool is also thought to be looking at Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez.
Bayern Munich and Real Madrid couldn't offer that, and Manchester City doesn't have the same historical appeal as the Anfield side.
