Fulham will need to fend off interest from West Ham to secure the signing of Romano Schmid from Werder Bremen.
The Austrian international joined the Bundesliga side from FC Liefering in Austria in 2019 and has gone on to play 157 games for the club.
Schmid is a versatile player capable of playing both centrally and out wide, with the majority of his appearances coming as either a number eight or behind the striker.
Fulham have endured a dismal transfer window.

The 25-year-old shone at the 2024 European Championships for his nation, scoring in a 3-2 win over the Netherlands.
And after missing out on yet another player this summer, manager Marco Silva may be keen to press ahead with a move for Schmid.
Fulham were targeting a move for Chelsea’s Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, but Everton have agreed a deal with the Blues for the former Leicester City man.

This is the latest setback in a dismal window for the Cottagers, who have completed just one signing by bringing in Benjamin Lecomte from Montpellier.
Dewsbury-Hall is a physical presence in the midfield and the 26-year-old shone for the Foxes as a more defensive option.

Schmid, who stands at just five foot six, does not offer the same physicality as his English counterpart, which is why the Austria international is often moved out wide by managers.
But last season, the 25-year-old was entrusted to play in the middle of the park, and he delivered one of his best seasons for Werder, scoring five and assisting five as his side finished one point off the European places in the Bundesliga.
Silva is a huge fan of versatile players, as it allows him to change his shape depending on the opposition.
Alex Iwobi, for example, was used as a right wing-back, central midfielder, and as a winger on both sides in the 2024/25 season.
Schmid has interest from Fulham and Aston Villa, but West Ham are believed to be leading the race for the Austrian midfielder.
Jacob Steinberg of The Guardian shared a post on X revealing the Hammers are considering a move for the Werder star.
Schmid would cost in the region of €15million (£13m), which is significantly cheaper than the £28m [BBC Sport] that Everton have agreed to pay for Dewsbury-Hall.
And with the end of the transfer window in sight and Silva’s squad yet to receive the boost of a first-team signing, the 25-year-old may be the perfect signing to kickstart Fulham‘s lifeless summer which has so far left them in desperate need of reinforcements.
