Liverpool legends Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres will once again grace the turf at Anfield when they face Ajax on Saturday.
The duo formed one of the most formidable partnerships in Premier League history during their time under Rafa Benitez.
Torres, who arrived from Atletico Madrid in 2007 for a then-club record fee of around £20 million, dazzled with his scoring prowess, netting 81 goals in 142 appearances over four years.
Gerrard and the Spanish sensation came agonisingly close to delivering Liverpool’s first Premier League title during the 2008-09 season but narrowly missed out to Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United.
Following Torres’ transfer to Chelsea, Gerrard went on to forge successful on-field collaborations with other goal-scoring talents at Liverpool, notably Luis Suarez.
The former Reds captain will be joined by fellow legends Maxi Rodriguez, Sami Hyypia, and Momo Sissoko, evoking nostalgia for the Anfield faithful.
Jari Litmanen, who represented both Liverpool and Ajax during his illustrious career, will also feature in the match, as Ajax become the latest club to participate in the annual LFC Foundation charity event.
In a heartwarming gesture, former England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson will be in the dugout for Liverpool, following the club’s response to the demands of supporters following Eriksson’s terminal cancer diagnosis.
Eriksson, a lifelong Liverpool supporter, expressed regret over not having the opportunity to manage the six-time Champions League winners.
“My father was a Liverpool fan, he’s still a Liverpool fan – he still lives – so it came from there,” he said.
“Then in Sweden they started [a TV show] so every Saturday you could see one game.
This is when all the games went on Saturday, so Liverpool, Liverpool.
“[In] ’79, something like that I think, I wrote to the club and asked if I could come to see a training session.
I saw a game and saw some training, I had the honour to go into the Boot Room of Liverpool at that time and that was great, fantastic.
“Many, many years Liverpool dominated the football in Europe.
They are still doing great.”
The charity match at Anfield continues the tradition of raising funds for the LFC Foundation, with clubs like Manchester United, Barcelona, and Celtic having contributed significantly to the cause in recent years.
As the international break unfolds, the current stars make way for the revered icons of Liverpool’s storied past in what promises to be a memorable encounter against Ajax.
