Former Manchester United player Rio Ferdinand has seemingly written Jurgen Klopp’s team talk ahead of the Champions League return against Real Madrid at Anfield by writing off Liverpool’s hopes.

When last lifting the trophy in 2019, Liverpool overcame a 3-0 first leg deficit against Real’s bitter rivals Barcelona to triumph 4-0 and reach the final in Madrid but without having any fans to roar them on at Anfield, Ferdinand is discounting their chances of another stirring comeback this time around.

“As you’d expect, Real Madrid are in great shape: 74%, that’s three out of four people and almost two thirds going for Man City.” Ferdinand responded: “I make that about right, I agree, totally.

For the second consecutive season, Klopp’s side must now try and overhaul a first-leg deficit from Madrid having lost 1-0 away to Real’s neighbours Atletico in the last 16 in 2020, eventually going out after extra time.

Liverpool found themselves 2-0 down after 36 minutes following goals from Vinicius Junior and Marco Asensio and although Mohamed Salah halved the deficit six minutes into the second half, Brazil international Vinicius struck again on 65 minutes to restore the hosts’ two-goal cushion.

Game over for Liverpool.”

BT Sport conducted a survey among fans of who they thought would progress from the first night of Champions League quarter-finals and Gary Lineker said: “Let’s have a look at the poll from last night’s games and who people think will go through.
