Gary Lineker picked out what he feels is one of Liverpool's most underrated players(Image: The Rest is Football)
Match of the Day host Gary Lineker has hailed Alexis Mac Allister as an unsung hero for Liverpool this season.
With almost as many appearances this season as Mohamed Salah, the ex-Brighton and Hove Albion player has been a key figure for Liverpool.
After a slow start to the Premier League campaign, which saw him fail to register a goal or assist until December 22, Mac Allister has been the engine and the creative hub of Arne Slot's midfield.
While assessing Liverpool's success, Lineker believes the World Cup winner deserved a special mention.
While speaking on The Rest is Football podcast, Lineker said: "I think at the start of the season, everyone was going, 'well, we're not sure [about how well Liverpool will do this season].
What a hit that was as well against Tottenham today."

"When you consider that they were in for [Martin] Zubimendi at the beginning of the season, didn't sign him for whatever reason, but their midfield has been one of their strengths.
I am really enjoying my time here.
"It was the right decision and I always thank Jurgen [Klopp] because he was a really important part and Julian Ward (Liverpool's former sporting director, who is now the club's technical director) as well."
In total, Mac Allister contributed five goals and four assists in 33 Premier League appearances for the Reds.
