Liverpool players competing at the 2024 Euros will be hoping to build momentum this summer to hit the ground running ahead of a new season under Arne Slot.

Several Reds players were called up for international duty this summer with silverware up for grabs in the European Championship.

If England fans were offered the opportunity to be top of their group with no defeats and only one goal conceded heading into the final group game then many would have taken it.

Yet, the tone around England’s Euros campaign is bleak and miserable after two performances against Serbia and Denmark that failed to get fans off their seats.

Gareth Southgate’s squad is certainly not short of world-class talent, but the Three Lions boss is failing to get the most out of his players.

Most would agree that Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold falls into the world-class category, but a new midfield role has not brought the best out of the 25-year-old.

Alexander-Arnold has faced heavy criticism over his new role, and Southgate is now under pressure to strike a new balance in midfield.

Alexander-Arnold’s place in the England lineup has been a hot topic of conversation and former England duo Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer have had their say.

Speaking on The Rest is Football Podcast, Shearer said: “He [Southgate] cannot go in with the same team because it hasn’t worked.

“The midfield gamble as he put it, in terms of Trent, I was thinking beforehand let’s see if it works, but he has to make changes,” Shearer added.

Lineker then interjected, saying “I actually feel a little bit sorry for Trent,”

Shearer agreed, arguing that it is “not his fault” that Trent has struggled in midfield.

It is baffling that Southgate only experimented with Alexander-Arnold in midfield once at England before throwing him in the deep end in Germany.

Given his incredible passing range, there has been plenty of speculation about Trent’s ability to play in midfield to cover his defensive fragilities at right-back.

However, this midfield experiment sticks out as an unplanned and unorganised mess.

If Trent is to start in this England squad, he serves a much better use in his natural position – allowing a natural midfielder to take his spot at the heart of the pitch.
