Gary Lineker quipped, 'it wasn't supposed to end like this' as he kicked off his final Match of the Day show.
Although he was set to front the BBC's FA Cup and World Cup coverage next season, his exit was accelerated amid controversy surrounding a perceived anti-Semitic tweet.
Introducing his final show, which featured a montage of his memorable moments, Lineker said: "It wasn't meant to end this way but with the title race over and the relegation places left confirmed, the Champions League was all we had left to talk about.
"Let's finish the season strongly with Gary's final show, enjoy an incredible summer of sport and look forward with excitement to what lies ahead."
Commentator Mark Scott said: "One of the best in the business makes his final appearance in front of the Match of the Day cameras, and you could say the same of Kevin De Bruyne..."
The BBC has already unveiled the successors to Lineker's role
