Liverpool have had some of the best players in history pass through the club over the years.

From the all-conquering team of the 1980’s, right through to Jurgen Klopp’s brilliant Champions League and Premier League winners of recent times.

As one of the most decorated teams in Europe, Liverpool’s history is full of truly legendary players.

Some of them even take their place in Klopp’s current first-team squad.

Not according to Gary Lineker, anyway.

It remains a regret of Liverpool’s recent history that Klopp never got the chance to coach perhaps the club’s greatest ever player.

There were just four-and-a-half months between Steven Gerrard leaving the Reds and the German taking over as manager.

Had Jurgen arrived just a little earlier, you’d imagine that Gerrard would have stayed beyond his 2015 exit and helped to build the new boss’ team.

And speaking to The Rest Is Football podcast, Gary Lineker has now hailed the Liverpool academy graduate as one of the two most ‘complete’ players of all time.

Lineker and his co-hosts Alan Shearer and Micah Richards were asked to name the most complete footballer.

After Shearer went with Wayne Rooney and Richards chose Yaya Toure, Lineker named the Reds former No.8, along with German icon Lothar Matthaus.

“Someone like Steven Gerrard, Lothar Matthaus, those kinds of players.

They could do a bit of everything,” raved the pundit.

As Liverpool look to nail down who will succeed Klopp as manager this summer, Gerrard’s name has been mentioned here and there.

The Reds now look likely to appoint Feyenoord’s Arne Slot as the man to follow Jurgen.

But before Slot came through as the front-runner, Gerrard was suggested as being the ideal candidate by his former Liverpool teammate Dirk Kuyt.

Journalist Neil Jones also recently claimed to be ‘surprised’ that Stevie G wasn’t being talked about more.
