Gary Lineker has explained why he believes it is the right time for Trent Alexander-Arnold to leave Liverpool.

The La Liga giants have long been touted as his likeliest destination.

Alexander-Arnold’s Anfield deal expires officially on June 30, but the Spanish club would like to have him in the squad in time for the Club World Cup.

Liverpool supporters have understandably reacted with mixed responses to the news that Alexander-Arnold will leave the club in the summer.

Lineker, though, believes now is the right time for the 26-year-old to head for pastures new and praised the right-back for having the balls to call time on his Liverpool career.

The former Everton forward also believes Alexander-Arnold should learn how to speak Spanish.

“It will get him respect within the dressing room, within the press and even with the people,” he said.

In a wide-ranging interview, Linker also opened up on his decision to leave the BBC.

The former England international will stand down as presenter of Match of the Day at the end of the season before leaving the corporation after fronting its coverage of the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Mexico and Canada.

And Lineker has revealed that one of the reasons behind his exit was the fact there was no great desire from the BBC to offer him another three-year contract.

“I think I’m a better presenter now than I’ve ever been,” he said.

Before admitting: “There wasn’t a great desire to give me another three-year contract.”
