Gary Neville has jumped to the defence of Mohamed Salah following a recent spell of poor form for Liverpool which continued in Saturday’s 2-2 draw with West Ham United.
Salah was named on the bench by Jurgen Klopp for the Premier League clash at the London Stadium, following his struggles in the Merseyside derby against Everton.
The 31-year-old came on as a substitute in the 79th minute against West Ham with the score level but failed to make a significant impact.
Having missed the victories over Luton and Nottingham Forest, the Egyptian has only managed to score two league goals in eight games.
Speculation surrounding Salah’s future at Anfield has intensified, particularly after his touchline altercation with departing manager Klopp, however, he is set to stay at Anfield for next season.
Salah has scored 17 Premier League goals with three games remaining, putting him on track to record his lowest goal tally for Liverpool since joining from AS Roma in 2017.
Speaking on The Gary Neville Podcast following Arsenal’s north London derby triumph over Tottenham, Neville suggested that Salah might benefit from a break after a demanding season with the Reds.
“Mo Salah has just hit a brick wall, and again, have got to be careful here,” the former Manchester United defender said.
“There is a player out here called Son (Son Heung-min) that I think hit a brick wall about 18 months ago, was it, or so where he looked like he was gone, he was struggling.
Salah has been almost ever-present for, like, six, seven years, it feels like.
“There just comes a point whereby they just need a break.
“It is too quick to say this is the end of Mo Salah because I think we have done that before.
“He just looks like he has just run marathon after marathon after marathon after marathon in every season, and it has got to a point where mentality and physical it has got to a point where he probably thinks, ‘it hit me’, and you don’t even know it sometimes?
“The season end is around the corner, he will get a break and he needs that break.”
