The 2022/23 season was one of the Liverpool’s ‘worst’ in recent times for most fans.

Although the club still managed to etch out a fifth placed finish, compared to the prior season where they were on the cusp of a quadruple, it felt like quite a fall from grace.

Indeed, Liverpool still managed to find themselves just four points outside of the top four, however, many fans believed they’d be in yet another two-horse race with Manchester City for the top flight title.

Evidently, this wasn’t meant to be and the Reds found themselves in need of a rebuild.

Enter, Dominik Szoboszlai, Alexis Mac Allister, Ryan Gravenberch and Wataru Endo.

A midfield revamp had been needed at the Anfield club for some time and, the addition of four players to the engine room was exactly what was needed.

Which is why, since the start of the season, Liverpool have found themselves being touted for each of the competitions they were competing in.

Granted, this hasn’t ended up playing out as the fairy tale final season for Jurgen Klopp (yet), however, Gary Neville still believes that Liverpool have “overachieved” this term.

Speaking on the Gary Neville podcast via Sky Sports, the former Manchester United legend said the following:

“If you said that Liverpool would be two points off Manchester City with five or six games left to go, I’d be like “’no chance’,” Neville said.

“This is a monumental achievement I think for Jurgen Klopp, for them to be where they are

I said it before the international break and a few Liverpool fans had a go at me, but I felt like they were hanging on.

“I still think Jurgen Klopp is getting the very best out of this Liverpool team and this Liverpool squad – and what we are now seeing is probably what they are, and they have overachieved to this point.

“I think Arsenal have looked really smooth in the last couple of months and City have started to look really smooth as they always do.

“Whereas with Liverpool, you felt they were always the scruffy one of the three, yet they were hanging in there, calling upon the emotion of the Anfield crowd and Jurgen Klopp’s last season.”

Following on from the disappointment that Liverpool fans endured last term, it’s not a surprise to see Neville claim that the squad have overachieved.

If at the start of the 2023/24 term, you asked Reds fans whether they’d be happy with a trophy and Champions League qualification, most would’ve likely said yes.

However, due to the strength in their performances over the course of the campaign, it has forced their expectations to change.

So not, although Klopp’s men have managed to win some silverware and find themselves competing for the title once again, fans feel as if they have been ‘let-down’ by their team.

Despite last weekends results making it feel as if Man City are now the run-away favourites for the title, football is an everchanging game and, as shown by Arsenal and Liverpool, slip-ups can occur.

As long as Liverpool don’t drop any further points, they still find themselves just a Manchester City loss away from regaining the top spot.
