Gary Neville has been reflecting on last night’s Merseyside derby at Goodison Park.

Jarrad Branthwaite’s opening goal and Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s forceful header in the second half clinched Everton’s first home victory in the Merseyside derby since October 2010.

Despite dominating possession, Liverpool found it challenging to penetrate Everton’s staunch defense, with Jordan Pickford turning in a standout performance between the posts for the Toffees.

Not only did they lose valuable points in the close championship race, but they also had to endure the humiliation of losing to their long-standing rivals.

This outcome was especially disappointing because it happened in the latter portion of Jurgen Klopp’s tenure with the team, undermining the hopes of many Liverpool supporters for a victorious farewell to the esteemed manager.

Consequently, Liverpool was unable to stage a comeback, leading to Jurgen Klopp suffering a defeat at Goodison Park in his last Merseyside derby as Liverpool’s manager.

Too many times this season, the Reds have had to rely on comeback wins after going down 1-0 first, and it feels like it has all caught up with them by the end of the season.

The truth is that the final few games of the Premier League season will probably be a slow and depressing affair rather than a Premier League title celebration that the German deserves.

What did Gary Neville say?

Speaking on the Gary Neville Podcast, the Manchester United legend revealed his surprise at Liverpool being ‘outmuscled’ in their own box and attacking Everton’s goal.

Highlighting Ibrahima Konate especially, Neville said:

“There was an element of this game where you felt Liverpool were outmuscled,” Neville said.

“I wouldn’t say outfought because Liverpool teams work hard but they were outmuscled by Everton in the big moments in both boxes.”

“Liverpool lost the game in both boxes, which is where you lose the game, but physically they lost the game in both boxes,”

“That was surprising.

I just expected them to be really powerful and dominant in those areas.”

The Reds are next in action away to West Ham this Saturday with kick-off scheduled for 12:30 BST.
