Gary Neville was an excellent player and deservedly goes down as a Manchester United legend for the career he’s had.

But sometimes, his opinion and views as a pundit are slightly odd – especially when it comes to speaking on Liverpool.

Earlier on in the season, Gary Neville made some big claims on Liverpool and Manchester United’s transfer business.

The Reds focused all their attention on the midfield rework, bringing in the likes of Dominik Szoboszlai, Wataru Endo, Ryan Gravenberch, and Alexis Mac Allister.

Seen by many as an upgrade and a step in the right direction, the Sky Sports pundit maintained that Jurgen Klopp would prefer Manchester United’s midfield.

He said in pre-season:

“When you look at the actual players, let’s take United as an example; Fernandes, Mount, Casemiro, Eriksen.

I think that Jurgen Klopp would swap his midfield now for United’s.”

Since Neville made his comments, Liverpool were in a heated title race until the final few games, while winning a trophy.

Newcomers such as Endo and Mac Allister have adapted and performed well.

The same, however, cannot be said for several of United’s midfielders.

Mason Mount has not lived up to his previous form at Chelsea with his constant injuries.

Meanwhile, Casemiro has had a disappointing season and looks a shadow of the player that dominated Europe with Real Madrid.

Now reflecting back on his comments, Neville raises a fair point.

What did Gary Neville say about Liverpool?

Speaking on the Overlap, Neville believes that players struggle to perform at Manchester United, and that if Klopp had the likes of Mount or Casemiro at Liverpool – they would look a lot better:

“This is a serious conversation but players at United as to what happens to them.

“You’d have taken [Mason] Mount over Szoboszlai, you’d have taken Casemiro over Endo or [Sofyan] Amrabat over Endo.”

“You’d have taken [Bruno] Fernandes over Mac Allister.”

“You’d have probably taken Kobbie Mainoo over Harvey Elliott.

They’ve got six players in that midfield that I think are good players.”

“They might not be the best, but they’re good players.”

“If you gave [Jurgen] Klopp and a stable Liverpool that six and you swapped that five from Liverpool into Manchester United, what do you think would happen to those players at Manchester United?”

“That’s my concern?

The other six players that are there, why is every player dying on their feet?”

Players have struggled to perform at Manchester United ever since Sir Alex Ferguson left.

Paul Pogba, Jadon Sancho, Chris Smalling, the list goes on of players that perform elsewhere but not at Old Trafford.

However, we don’t agree with Neville’s assumptions that the obvious choice would be to take Mainoo over Elliott or McTominay over Jones (or any of his choices for that matter).

It goes to show how good of a manager Jurgen Klopp has been during him tenure at the club.

Most players he signs slot in seamlessly, the same cannot be said for the Red Devils.
