Gary Neville shut down claims from Peter Drury that Liverpool could take any of their attention away from the Europa League clash against Atalanta - even with a three-goal deficit to overcome.

The Reds suffered a shock defeat at Anfield when the Serie A side made their visit in the quarter-final match. Goals from Gianluca Scamacca and Mario Pasalic ensured Jurgen Klopp's side have an uphill task when they make the trip to Italy on Thursday.

Entering that match, Klopp chose to start with the likes of Mo Salah and Luis Diaz on the bench but saw the visitors end his team's 33-game unbeaten run at home. Liverpool are no strangers to unexpected European turnarounds but rarely are they simultaneously faced with a nerve-wracking title race.

Defeat to Atalanta was followed by a slip-up against Crystal Palace. Liverpool found themselves overtaken by Manchester City and in third place.

The situation Klopp's team find themselves in left commentator Peter Drury ready to pose Neville the question of whether they are better off turning their attention to six wins in their remaining Premier League matches. Peter Drury said on Sky Sports: “This is a silly hypothetical question really.

"But if you were them, given when they are in that European tie, would you be going to Italy and say, ‘comes on guys, let’s have one of our miracle nights’ or would you think, of course we would go and compete, but from next Sunday at Fulham, we win six-in-a-row until the end of the Premier League season.”

The former Manchester United captain believes that some form of success on Thursday evening is required so alter Liverpool's momentum. Defeat against Palace has left that non-negotiable in his eyes.

“I don’t think they can do anything other than treat that game on Thursday night with full 100 per cent attention,” said Neville.

“I don’t think they can, particularly after what happened (on Sunday). There is another factor that has come in. They have got to get their form back. They have got to get back into winning ways and they have to get back to momentum. They have to swing the momentum, somehow.

“Going out on Thursday, with a whimper, playing a weakened team, is not going to get their season back on track. It’s not! I think they have to go there on Thursday night and think about a famous night. To get something going, to get some sort of momentum shift. If they had won against Palace, but not now! If that thought was ever there in Jurgen Klopp ’s mind, it would have gone. He will go there on Thursday night and thinking of, a special night, and we are going to get this season back on track quickly.”
