Gary Neville unimpressed by Arsenal marquee signing - 'he's scruffy'

Mikel Arteta could have a concern or two after Gary Neville raised red flags about one of Arsenal’s newest recruits this summer.

The Gunners have had the perfect start to the new season, and sit top of the Premier League table with two wins from two.

On Saturday (23 August), Arsenal beat Leeds United 5-0 at the Emirates, blowing the newly promoted side away in what was a sublime display in their second match of the campaign.

Mikel Arteta’s side were rarely threatened in defence and cruised through the contest, barely breaking out of third gear.

Viktor Gyokeres had a difficult first 45 minutes against Leeds, and his build-up play left former Manchester United defender Gary Neville unimpressed.

Speaking live on Sky Sports Main Event (23 August, 6:12pm), Neville said: “It’s not his scoring, is it?

It doesn’t look like he’s neat in his work, or tidy and bringing people into play.

“He’s got good awareness around him, he just looks a little bit scruffy.”

However, Gyokeres had a much better second half for the Gunners, scoring his first Premier League goal just three minutes after the break, powerfully driving into the box before drilling a low shot past Lucas Perri.

The Swede then added his second, and Arsenal’s fifth, in the 95th minute, converting a penalty won by debutant Max Dowman.

Meanwhile, Newcastle United won’t consider any transfer bids for either Anthony Gordon or Bruno Guimaraes this summer, sources have told Football Insider.

Football Insider revealed in May that Arsenal were interested in a move for Gordon this summer, but their transfer activity has taken a different course after Newcastle qualified for the Champions League.

The Magpies are adamant that the winger will remain at the club beyond the end of the transfer window.

However, Arteta’s side could still be in the market for another wide option, despite the signing of Eberechi Eze from Crystal Palace.
