Georginio Wijnaldum has hit back at an ESPN post that has linked something he said in 2016 to the current Alexander Isak situation.

The Isak to Liverpool transfer saga is something that is heavily documented.

The player remains on strike amid interest from Liverpool and a personal desire on his side that the Reds are the only club for him.

Tensions continue to rise as Newcastle United fail to find a suitable replacement for the Swede and the striker pushes through a move despite potential consequences.

Alexander Isak has taken the decision to force through a move by refusing to play, instead of the more admirable route of negotiating off the pitch but still giving your all on it.

Former Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum joined the club from Liverpool.

The Dutch maestro featured 179 times for the Reds between 2016 and 2021, winning the Champions League, the Premier League, the UEFA Super Cup and the Club World Cup.

He has now hit back at a social media post from ESPN UK, that has linked his exit from Newcastle in 2016 to the ongoing Alexander Isak transfer saga.

ESPN UK pulled a quote from 2016 in which Wijnaldum explained the way he had done about securing his move to Liverpool.

The quote reads: “When the previous season ended, I said that I wouldn’t force a move.

When Liverpool came in for me, I made up my mind that I wanted to come here, but I wasn’t going to force it because I appreciated what Newcastle and their fans did for me.”

A quote that does make sense given the current context of the Alexander Isak situation, but Wijnaldum was quick to give context.

He commented on the post, saying: “This is something I said almost 10 years ago before my move to Liverpool?

Why do you post it like it’s my opinion about Isak and his decision?”

“This is something between Isak and Newcastle and Liverpool, please keep me out of it
