Rangers legend Richard Gough hopes Steven Gerrard won't be lured back to Anfield for at least another five years as the Liverpool great stands on the verge of history.
Gerrard has moved the Scottish giants to the brink of their first championship in a decade after a 4-1 win over Dundee United on Sunday extended their unbeaten league record and opened up an 18-point lead on Celtic with only eight games remaining.
"With the quality of players he’s got up there at the moment he’s done a remarkable job, he really has.
“Dave King, who was the chairman, is a friend of mine and he told me that he’d sounded out Kenny Dalglish as to whether Steven would be interested in the Rangers job.
The former Liverpool midfielder has also led Rangers into the knockout stages of the Europa League for the second successive year, with the Ibrox side taking a 4-3 lead into their round of 32 second leg at home to Antwerp on Thursday.
“The word on the street is that one day he will come back and manage Liverpool, but I just hope that doesn’t happen for maybe five years or so because he’s still a young man.”
Gough, who played against Gerrard during a two-year spell with Everton at the turn of the millennium, has also revealed the small role he unwittingly had in helping the 40-year-old move north of the border.
"Steven will do his own thing but if he ever needs anything I think he can phone Walter.
