Getafe president Angel Torres has revealed he has no plans to sell the club to Fenway Sports Group (FSG) following recent reports that Liverpool’s majority shareholders were interested in purchasing the Madrid-based side.
It’s understood FSG wants to expand its soccer portfolio, which only includes Liverpool at present.
Michael Edwards’ return to FSG as the company’s new CEO of football, was partly motivated by a desire to purchase a controlling stake in another team and help build a mutli-club ownership model.
Malaga was outlined as a possible option in March, but that has since been quashed, while French club Bordeaux was also under consideration.
Asked in an interview with Spanish outlet COPE whether he would be willing to sell the club to FSG, he replied: “No.
But it's a long way off.”
It has been reported that FSG’s desire to purchase a European club is to help circumnavigate post-Brexit recruitment laws, which make the purchasing of players under 18 more difficult.
In a statement released in June, a spokesperson for Liverpool’s majority shareholders said: “FSG routinely engages in conversations and evaluates opportunities across global sports, a common process to assess ventures that align with the organization's strategic priorities.”
FSG’s portfolio of clubs includes the Boston Red Sox and Pittsburgh Penguins, while it also has links to NASCAR and golf.
The sporting conglomerate purchased Liverpool in 2010 and, while not always universally popular with supporters, has helped reestablish the Reds as one of the leading forces in European soccer.
Should it purchase another soccer team, FSG would become the latest multi-club force in the Premier League, along with the likes of Manchester City’s owners, who control 13 clubs across the globe.
Manchester United, via Sir Jim Ratcliffe, now has links to Nice and Lausanne, Chelsea’s BlueCo owners purchased Ligue 1 side Strasbourg in 2023, while Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa also have links to other teams.
As for Getafe, it finished 13th in La Liga last season and has spent just one season out of the Spanish top tier in the last 20 years.
