Getafe CF president Ángel Torres has come out with a new statement on the reported FSG interest in acquiring the club.
Reports emerged in mid-June that FSG were actively pursuing a takeover of Spanish La Liga side Getafe.
The Boston-based consortium, led by principal owner John Henry, had identified the Madrid-based club as their preferred target after previously abandoning pursuits of French side Bordeaux and Spain’s Malaga.
Michael Edwards’ return to the FSG fold as CEO of Football was specifically designed to help identify and construct a multi-club ownership model, similar to what Manchester City’s owners have achieved with their global network.
The former Liverpool sporting director’s expertise in player recruitment and development was seen as crucial to making such a venture successful.
Located in the southern suburbs of Madrid, Getafe has established itself as a stable La Liga outfit with growing infrastructure.
The club is currently undergoing significant stadium renovations to modernize their 16,500-capacity Estadio Coliseum, with work expected to be completed by late 2027 or early 2028.
Spanish outlet COPE has relayed comments from president Ángel Torres, who asserted publicly this Tuesday that the La Liga side is not for sale:
“No.
It’s not been for sale since I arrived,” he said.
“I’ve been here for 25 years, and every year a journalist comes out saying [something]… And now it’s Liverpool.
“But it’s not for sale.
But until then, there’s a long way to go.”
This marks a change from earlier statement when Torres said that he could look to step down.
Last month, when pressed for information on reports, an FSG spokesperson stated:
“FSG routinely engages in conversations and evaluates opportunities across global sports, a common process to assess ventures that align with the organisation’s strategic priorities”
