Former Liverpool midfielder Gini Wijnaldum has fired back after old comments were unearthed following his move to Newcastle United.

The Dutchman took aim and warned to keep him out of the Alexander Isak situation as the Reds remain in the midst of the Swede's transfer saga.

Arne Slot's side visit St James' Park on Monday as they look to make it back-to-back wins to begin the Premier League season.

The Reds travel to the North East where they will be expecting a raucous reception with Isak's bitter saga adding to the narrative around the match.

The Sweden international has been training away from his teammates after expressing a desire to leave Newcastle with Liverpool showing an interest in his services.

Wijnaldum made the move to Anfield from Newcastle in 2016 and an account on Instagram unearthed quotes where he said he made his mind up to join Liverpool but didn't want to force a move because of the supporters.

The quotes re-emerge during a period of anger among Newcastle supporters for the conduct of their record-signing.

However, Wijnaldum took aim at the comments and issued a warning not to drag him into the situation surrounding the forward, Newcastle and a possible move to Liverpool.

He replied: "This is something I said almost 10 years ago before my move to Liverpool.

"Why do you post it like it's my opinion about Isak [and] his decision?

"This is something between Isak and Newcastle/Liverpool please keep me out of it.

Thank you."

He followed up by sharing the post on his Instagram story with the caption: "The media [facepalm emoji]."

Isak broke his silence this week as he lamented the 'broken promises' over Newcastle failing to sanction his exit this summer.

Newcastle issued a stern statement in response to the shock public admission from the forward, in light of his PFA Awards snub despite being included in the Premier League Team of the Season.
